Because There Are Two Sides to Every Story

The End…Or Is It?

“The decades-long drama over the plan to dump high-level nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain is coming to a close,” writes Las Vegas Review-Journal columnist Geoff Schumacher on Friday. “Nevada appears likely to win the war at last.”

Judging Loux

Of all the takes on anti-Yucca boss Bob Loux and his escape from justice before the Ethics Commission, no one nailed it as well as CityLife editor Steve Sebelius with this:

Loux the Looter Slips Hangman’s Noose

If the Legislature is still looking for a money-saving non-essential government agency to ax out of the budget - you know, for the children and stuff - take the state’s Ethics Commission…please.

“By a 3-2 vote,” reports Cy Ryan of the Las Vegas Sun, the state Ethics Commission cleared Bob Loux of allegations that he gave himself unauthorized pay raises while he was director of the Office of Nuclear Projects.”

This despite the fact that Bob Loux gave himself and his staff unauthorized pay raises while simultaneously busting his department’s budget. Oh, and despite the fact that Loux admitted he did it.

Yucca Still Alive

“Yucca is still alive despite the denial rhetoric across the media,” writes Nevada blogger Mike Zahara.  “So long as the 4 years long licensing process continues, the project still continues, so get over it, and know when you’re being lied to by politicians, even ones you like and admire.  They’re just playing delaying games; it’s political choreography, again pay attention to what they’re doing, not saying.

A Whole Lotta Yucca Goin’ On

Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nevada) desperately wants Nevadans to believe the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository project is dead. And I don’t use the term “desperately” loosely.

Not Ready to Call Yucca DOA Yet

While Sen. Harry Reid and other Nevada politicians have declared the Yucca Mountain “dead,” some Nevadans aren’t ready to let the potential financial “stimulus” of this massive public works project slip through their fingers. The Nevada Alliance for Economic Prosperity was recently formed to bring the project, in modified form, back to life. Here’s a synopis from the new organization’s executive director, Randi Thompson…

Yucca Declared DOA…Again

Headline over Associated Press story in the Las Vegas Sun: “Energy secretary: Yucca no longer option for nuclear waste.”

Headline over Associated Press story in the Reno Gazette-Journal: “Yucca no longer an option.”

Headline over Associated Press story in the Nevada Appeal: “Yucca no longer option for waste site.”

Headline in the Las Vegas Review-Journal: “Official: Nuclear dump is out.” The story also includes this quote from Nevada Sen. Harry Reid: “I am pleased that President Obama and Secretary Chu are holding firm on their commitment to kill the dump.”

So Yucca’s dead, right? After all, all the headlines - not to mention Harry Reid - say so. Yucca is no longer an option. Period. Except…

Yucca Ball’s in Harry’s Court

Sen. Harry Reid - the first or second most powerful politician in Washington, depending on whom you ask - has assured Nevadans that Yucca Mountain is dead. He says he’s going to continue bleeding the project dry of funding in the budget process until he gets it down to the size where he presumably can drown it in the bathtub.

Hmmm. Where have I heard that before? Oh, yeah. HERE

Meet New (anti-Yucca) Boss; Same as Old (anti-Yucca) Boss

Nevada state legislators in Carson City are still whining about Gov. Jim Gibbons’ proposal to trim the unnecessary staff at the Agency Against Nuclear Projects from seven to two, despite the fact that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says President Barack Obama says Yucca Mountain is dead - which pretty much says the entire agency is pretty much useless, right?
