Just the Facts, Ma’am
The following letter-to-the-editor by Bobby Craig of Reno, Nevada was published this morning in the Reno Gazette-Journal:
Fact: Nuclear energy is less likely to have an accident than any other form of energy.
Fact: The geology of Yucca Mountain is far better known than any other comparable area in the world; it is the safest location.
Fact: Thirty years spent developing safe shipping containers and methods for radioactive waste show it to be safe.
Fact: Purchase of oil by the U.S. is the greatest exchange of wealth ever and must be reduced as soon as possible.
Fact: The inherent cost of nuclear power is significantly less than any other source except hydroelectric.
Fact: We can’t build sufficient solar and/or wind to replace carbon-based fuels as fast as we can build nuclear.
Fact: Neither solar nor wind are 24/7 sources; both require expensive and inefficient storage.
Fact: Geothermal is limited primarily to the West.
Fact: The U.S. needs to develop alternative resources as fast as practical, but we also need to reduce oil imports as soon as possible.
Fact: We can’t replace oil with alternative energies within the time we can drill and produce new oil and natural gas.
Fact: Congress is responsible.
