Dead…Yet Still Moving Forward
Back on July, 15, 2008, Nevada Sen. Harry Reid had this to say about building the nation’s nuclear waste repository here in Nevada:
“The evidence that Yucca Mountain will never happen is growing by the day…”
The evidence is growing every day, huh? Then how does Reid explain this, as reported yesterday by the Associated Press?
“Regulators have rejected a petition by the state of Nevada against the federal government’s license application for a nuclear waste dump 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas.”
Let’s recap here: The feds submitted an application in May for approval to open Yucca Mountain, the final step in the overall process before operations can begin. Nevada filed an objection. Their objection has now been rejected. Which means the state lost again - and the approval process continues uninterrupted.
Now, this is not to say that the repository will ultimately be approved. It still could very well be rejected by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. But Harry Reid’s claim that the evidence shows that Yucca Mountain will never happen is pure, unadulterated USDA political bull-(expletive). The real evidence, as opposed to Reid’s wishful thinking, clearly shows that there still is a very good chance Nevada WILL get the repository, whether we like it or not.
But thanks to head-in-the-sand political posturing by elected officials such as Harry Reid, who continue to refuse to at least constructively engage in negotiations for benefits, we could end up getting it without even the courtesy of a little Vaseline…if you know what I mean, and I think you do. Ouch.
